Chad: So your daughter is a singer? Zale: Not technically, but this is her first real public performance. She told me not to come, but I couldn't help it and I snuck in anyway to support her.
Family- it's all we have in the end, right?
Chad: Yeah. Zale: Don't look so glum kid. If you ain't got one you can always find one. And Hey, if you do ever find that someone? Someone special? You know what you do? Chad: I don't-
Zale: You hold on to em, and you fuck em, right in the heart. Don't let that shit slip you by. Chad: You curse a lot you know that? Zale: Ahh, yeah, my watcher doesn't let me cuss back in my canon save. Gotta use em while I've got em y'know?
Zale: Speaking of family- Chad: Your daughter?
Zale: Mr. Chinsley, may I introduce you to my Niece, Hedy Joy.

Dear John || Pt.1
Masters of the Air Fanfiction
Requested: ☑️ My sweet Bri begged for a love-letter-centric Egan fic and with her wonderfully infectious ideas this was produced, the first part of many.
Summary: Major John Egan wasn’t the pen-pal sort but a couple of hours into a dark night full of writing condolence letters, he finds himself wondering why he never tried his hand at the nicer forms of correspondence. Who better to reanimate his numb inspiration than the glamorous Miss Lana Tierney? -the army’s girl next door, the pinup so prolific she was practically a wall paper print and Bucky’s long-standing cinematic crush. It’s not like she’ll read it anyways, tucked up in luxury in Beverly Hills with carts of tedious fanmail burned in her back yard each day, his letter will get lost in the mix. It’s harmless. That thought -and the booze- may loosen his pen a little too much but it’s alright, it’s not like she’ll read it. Right? Right.
It was specified in the request to use or create some of those old WWII dirty acronyms, so in here you have Bucky making up his own for his starlet crush (acorn). I’m ripping off a few ladies here, Lana Turner, Betty Grable, Hedy Lamarr to name a few -the moodbaord is for general aesthetics, I try to keep my fem!readers and oc’s as ambiguous physically as possible. (Besides the fact Johnny Egan finds you mouthwatering, which -be honest with yourself here sweet thing!!- he would.
Rating: 18+ this is the letter writing, vintage form of sexting. i kid you not, this man swings wildly from sweet as pie to downright filthy and vintage slang for anatomical parts is used freely. This would make a better shameful diary entry than a letter but he’s a rogue and he’s in a war, cut him some slack.
Fun game: how many times can Major Egan manage to mention Buck in a horny fan letter to his crush?
Dear A.C.O.R.N.
It is highly unlikely that you remember me, but, all the same, we have met. Now, hear me out, I’m sure fellas say that to you all the time but my point still stands and to match them I’ll do you one better, seeing as how I am not buttering you up for something in return -I have met you, yes, but I have also sung to you.
There. Said it.
Not that you’d recall that either, but then again maybe you would, but either way it doesn’t matter as the entire reason I am writing to you is because it is entirely unlikely you will ever open this god-awful endeavor made of pen and ink.
I am quite drunk, you see.
A necessary medicine. And they do make good whiskey here, one of the few joys they haven’t rationed yet. It’s got me wondering what’s your poison of choice. Something fruity? Or are you an olive sucker? Like that salt on the rim? Or maybe you go for somethin’ silky and warm goin’ down your throat? Which-ever it is, I bet you’d be a surprise, sweet ACORN, I just know it. You were a surprise at the canteen. Back in Jersey? Before shipping out? I know you were on a whole tour and kisses were goin’ for dollars but still, you were a surprise.
A lovely one, really. And that’s the point of this letter. To tell you that you're lovely and while I’m not the pen-pal sort, I’ve written home 80 letters tonight to families whose boys I was supposed to bring home. It got me thinking: Bucky, why the hell don’t you write nice letters? Whyd you only write ‘em now that you gotta? And it occurred to me then that the one silver lining in this whole Air Exec job is the desk, the lamp and the office.
I could write anybody from here. I could write you.
And you wouldn't read it so I could write anything. And it could be a nice letter. ‘Cause I don’t know anybody of yours to tell you anythin’ sad about them and you don’t know me except that I’m alive and drunk. Which is better than those poor eighty two bastards. Which reminds me, I’ve still got two more but maybe Buck will take those, he took seventeen off to his bunk to write from there. Buck doesn't have a desk because he’s not as important as me and he has all the luck.
You’ve met Buck, too, Acorn. He was the appalled pretty one with the straw colored hair pulling me off you after we had our duet. He objects to your nickname, see, even though you didn’t seem to mind. You were lovely, A.C.O.R.N. And I’d not wanna ruin this letter by telling you what it means, not now that I’m actually writing to you and determined to be nice but Buck knows and while he agrees with me as much as any man in the nation that you’ve got the most robust rack on the silver screen -he has objections, you see. So it wasn’t the song or the canoodling he didn’t like, and I still say, he broke up a little love affair that night. Bastard. So I’m writing to you now because as the acronym suggests, I’ve got a goal in my mind in regards to you. I tell myself -Bucky, there’s reasons to make it back.
Reasons, Bucky, reasons. Like Acorn and her halo of gorgeous hair that smelled like coconuts and the way she thought my new lyrics were pretty clever. That’s what you said, acorn, you said they were pretty clever. Now I may have been a little drunk then, too, but I think you might’ve been tipsy, that coke smelled too strong to be straight. I still have the straw you gave me, it’s bent to hell but I’ve taken it up each mission. I’m not counting on it for luck so much as a reminder of the aforementioned reasons. To come back. Your lipstick has mostly worn off but I figure it’s still the same.
You had your precious lips around it. That’s what matters.
And that’s the sorta sentence that makes Buck think I shouldn’t write letters.
But what he can’t accuse me of is being dishonest or vague. I’m being straight with you. You deserve that much, you were lovely and very straight shootin’ yourself, dear little girl. I could pinch your cheeks right now, you’re so sweet. And don’t think me a coward for sayin’ all this under assumption that you won’t read it. I hope you don’t since it’s not worth your time and if you do I wish I’d written less about me and more about you but I need you to know if we were face to face I’d say the same:
You were lovely, you ARE lovely!!!! and I think all your work for us boys is swell and you’ve got the bestest set of knockers any of us have ever seen and I’m stayin’ alive in hopes to see ‘em again some day and while the girls here are swell and sweet they aren’t zippy like you. At least not the ones who’ve put out so far. And if I had you face to face, I’d find a way to make you laugh again and I’d tell you to your face you’re lovely and if I’d been David Nivin in Love Trap with you, I’d have stayed in that little kitchen with you and ate all your burnt flapjacks and watched you in your apron and made babies with you till we were old.
Anyway. It needed saying. And maybe I’ll say it to your face given the chance again. I was working my way up to a proposition for burgers and milkshakes when Buck ruined it. But maybe you’ll tour? Here!! Over here. In England or maybe in Europe once we kick the Nazis bastards out.
Now that’s motivation. That’s a reason! -clear out a nice little swath of land through fortress europe so Miss Lana Tierney can sing in the city of lights surrounded by nothin’ but wine and good food and a buncha boys who love and appreciate her.
Because we do, ma’am. We do.
And make no mistake, I do this to keep the country safe and try to bring as many boys home as I can but every second I also think - it’s where you are too, and so I must continue keeping it safe.
If you, by some godawful chance, do read this letter, please don’t feel pressed to respond or pull out a restraining order. Think of it this way, it’d just be one more “Dear John” letter and the system is clogged as it is. You just deserve a nice letter and my wrist is past sore, one more doesn't matter. And being unable to deliver nice, I’ve written this.
~ I am ever your respectful (and hammered) admirer, Maj. John Egan
P.S. if you do happen to read this I’m sorry. Buck told me not to do this but I just had to Acorn. You’re just too swell and I really have got to get myself to a theater before long, I miss your Angel face.
Masterlist
Thank you for reading! This was entirely out of my usual comfort zone but I’ve had fun writing it and I’m trying to tune my ear to pick up his voice, that’s been stretching. This series will have many letters in it but there will also be fic, so fear not. I’ve got some plans already figured out for this series but I do love a suggestion or ten so have at the inbox with what you’d like to see play out.
Hope you enjoyed, if you’d like to be tagged in future MOTA fics, drop a note below.

Ok, so far here are the cdramas rumored for the fall that I have any interest in, from most to least:
Kill Me Love Me (November) - you’ve seen those positively unhinged trailers, and both Wu Jinyan and Liu Xueyi look to be on fire (plus on a purely shallow front, few other actors do it for me the way they do.)
Snowy Night Timeless Love (October) - the rumor for this airing came out of nowhere so who knows but a tragic wuxia romance and my faves Li Qin and Zeng Shunxi and the trailer is stunning. Plus it’s based on a novel by the author of Listening Snow Tower and I loved that one.
The Story of Pearl Girl (October) - this barely misses to the previous two in terms of anticipation and only does so because the narrative of “underdog FL rises to prominence through commence” has been done a lot lately and often done in a way that doesn’t truly satisfy me. But the trailer is great, I adore Zhao Lusi, and the fact that this reunites her with Liu Yuning (and this time he looks even hotter!) is AAAAA!
Reborn (October) - a modern! It’s not the end of the world, I promise. The trailer looked intense and angsty not like the usual fluffy moderns I can’t stand and I am a big fan of Zhang Jingyi now.
Guardians of the Dafeng (November) - this one is high risk but potentially high reward. Best case scenario? They pull off another Joy of Life - funny and ahistorical but also dark and smart and moving. I think the chances of that are slim - Wang Hedi, though I will always have a soft spot for him because of CLJ, is no Zhang Ruoyun, plus JoL is a miracle that was almost impossible to replicate unless you get the same brilliant combo of perfect writing, directing and acting. But what if….
The Rise of Ning (October) - if this was rumored before I finished LYF2 or Are You the One dropped, I’d be way more excited. By the end AYTO finished, I was getting irritated just seeing Zhang Wanyi’s face anywhere. (Yes there is such a thing as too much exposure esp when that exposure is in stuff that raises my blood pressure.) Srill I did like the trailer back before all this mess and this has the advantage of FL being played by Ren Min who I adore and not WCR who I cannot stand. And ZWY is a decent actor in the abstract if I can manage not to think about his past roles and his overexposure. So here is hoping.
Brocade Odyssey (??? Fall) - I had little interest in this (I genuinely have no interest in dramas centering on cloth industries esp when they must be bland enough to be allowed to air on TV) and that was before that utterly snooze worthy MV they dropped and one of the secondaries getting into a pimp/tax scandal which apparently resulted in them cutting him as much as they could which means the story will be even more of a mess than it was likely to be otherwise. I might check this out out of trainwreck syndrome but I expect nothing.
Echo of Her Voice (Sept 22) - if there was ever a drama trailer designed to make me hurl, this was it. Add in the fact that the ML actor seems to have a knack for being in dramas that never work for me and the fact that it’s set in (haha really) “school” - no thank you!

"Has anyone given any thought to why all the frequent screen actresses who do a little stage show every few years are white blonde ladies of a certain age? Well, regardless, this white blonde lady is a tour de force on stage, and few other screen actors can say the same thing."
youtube
"Last propaganda was a eulogy, so let's make this one a celebration. Marin had a voice we will never hear the likes of again. She could be a bold and brassy broad with a belt that would make Ethel Merman jealous. And in the same breath, she could soar up the octave to shatter every glass in the room with a crystal-clear coloratura most singers only dream about. It didn't matter if it was a dirty ditty or a wrenching aria. She owned every song that passed her lips. When she walked into a room, she brought joy with her. She exuded light and happiness and love even to the end. She was truly a golden goddess of a woman with a naughty sense of humor that would have you rolling on the floor with laughter."

My posts
My mom was in a car wreck this past week, but she’s okay and it looks like insurance will pay for the massive damage to the back third of her whole-ass car, and it won’t be totaled. Panic-inducing, and my mom’s a little spooked about getting back out on the road, but it’s going to be okay, I think.
I was going back through my #pride posts to find things to seasonally reblog, and I remembered I’d written this post about Donna Summer and Disco Demolition Night.
Reblogs of interest
Politics: Felonies Georg is the first U.S. president to be convicted of a crime! in court! a lot!
Speaking of birdsrightsactivist, who is featured in that post, it turns out that she is a delightful evolutionary biologist who coined the word “birb.”
Hot Vintage Lady Poll finals: It’s Eartha Kitt vs. Hedy Lamarr. Be advised that it’s a 24-hour flash poll, as the men’s was. Bring it home, Eartha Nation.
Kick off Pride Month with this massive To Wong Foo post that gets better and better every time someone adds to it.
Hozier Watch 2024: A ethereal white butterfly crashed the Noblesville show, presumably with an urgent message from the Faerie Queen (Florence Welch).
More from hellenhighwater’s minotaur sculpture trilogy.
An extra hour in the brick pit: yet another scam event in Britain. Although I’m halfway to believing that’s just the Official DashCon Ball Pit LEGO Kit.®

Song of the Day #11:
'500 Miles', cover by Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, and Starl Sands.
youtube
Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name
Lord, I can't go a-home this a-way
Track #4 on the 'Inside Llewyn Davis' soundtrack.
Fun fact: This song is also known as 'Railroader's Lament' (which makes me think of every Gordon Lightfoot song ever). While this song was covered in the previously mentioned album (and is the version I woke up with), it was originally credited to Hedy West. The version that, as far as I know, popularised the song the most is the Peter, Paul, and Mary version (an astounding band whose rendition of 'There Is A Ship' deserves full appreciation). The most financially lucrative version was the one performed by Bobby Bare:
youtube
There Is a Ship (Live Version) by Peter, Paul, and Mary:
youtube
Their version of '500 Miles':
youtube
Which version is your favourite?
Personal blurb: I've been driving from one side of the U.S. to the other, and I woke up yesterday morning with this stuck in my head; it felt only fitting. I kept driving and as it turns out: it can take an entire day (possibly more, depending on where you're going) to drive through Texas, so I missed yesterday's song. Oh well. The joys of doing something I love for the sake of loving it is that there's no constraint to how it happens.
I love the version from the movie, because it feels so appropriately mournful. The laments of someone who doesn't know how to be anything but forward. I empathise with the desire for freedom. There is this space where I am on a train, or in the airport waiting for a flight, and there is nothing I can do but be where I am. It is one of my favourite places in the world, that limbo. On trains especially, where I get to watch the world pass me by; I am a part of it and yet it is so much more than I am, and equal to what I am. We are worlds.
I think often about how we are always a spectrum. That we can simultaneously want to be free and float from world to world, and long for a sense of home and security. And what I am is a balance, that swings day to day. Just like everything else, no? Hypocrisy is the representation of that, I think. We're not actually hypocritical; we're just everything, all at once.

As Valerian made a dash for the exit, Chad was making his own escape. "Please excuse me, it's been wonderful talking to you both. Have a good rest of your evening."
He made a beeline away from the table, cutting across the stage before he could receive a response.
Zale: Uh, alright- Hedy: Wonderful to finally meet you Chad.
Hedy: I'm sure we'll meet again soon.

Coeli's Picks: Green, part 1
Ever since I started picking up speed with this project, my friend @coeli1000 has been sending me suggestions to help me fill the blog. I haven't used all of her suggestions, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's hard to find good pictures of a particular outfit. Sometimes it's an outfit that's already been covered by one of the other posters (I like to give preference to outfits that haven't been done already). Sometimes I don't feel that I know enough about the source to talk about it intelligently. Sometimes I just run out of days in a month before I can get to everything!
So, for the month of "anything goes," I thought I'd feature a bunch of her suggestions that I haven't covered in detail so far. I'll be posting them in groups rather than individually. I reserve the right to cover any of these outfits in full at a later time, but meanwhile, here's a sample!
One Dress a Day Challenge
Anything Goes December
Samson and Delilah (1949) / Hedy Lamarr as Delilah
"Hedy Lamarr's peacock dress from Samson and Delilah is a stunner."
Galavant / Mallory Jansen as Madalena
"Queen Madalena on Galavant had a nice one - awfully simple for royalty, but a gorgeously saturated color."
Cleopatra (1963) / Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra
"I expect somebody has already done Elizabeth Taylor's green Cleopatra dress, but just in case:"
The Story of Alexander Graham Bell (1939) / Loretta Young as Mabel Hubbard Bell
"Loretta Young wore this beauty in The Story of Alexander Graham Bell, though unfortunately the movie was in black and white."
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) / Winona Ryder as Mina Murray Harker
"There are several green dresses to choose among in Bram Stoker's Dracula."
Murdoch Mysteries / Hélène Joy as Dr. Julia Ogden
Murdoch Mysteries / Siobhan Murphy as Ruth Newsome
"Ruth Higgins-Newsome wears this confection of stripes and feathers while making a deal with Dr. John Kellogg to invest in his cornflake company. He looks at her and announces that he's going to put a rooster on the box. She asks her husband "Do I look like a rooster?" Well…"

SPOILERS UNDER HERE
Joel romanticising his past with Midge is ick, but it sums the way Joel thinks about things pretty perfectly - romanticised and better than they are. I was very happy to see Penny Pan wasn’t completely airbrushed from history.
Midge had a less rosey view of things, but I really do not need to Midge dance with both Joel and Gordon this season but not Lenny. 😒
Midge and Joel getting a drink though? Ugh. I can only hope they will both come to realise that they share history and kids and can be friends, but they don’t need to have a relationship.
The Abe and Esther stuff is so cute, and very welcome light relief after…Joel.
Midge referencing Lenny - complete with finger clicks - was the everythiiiiing! 🥹 (Also, how sad is it that I’m so desperate for Lenny content this season that that brought me such joy? 😩)
The Princess Margaret bit was…fine, idk 🤷🏼♀️ I still hate Gordon Ford, but Hedy is such a promising character and it’s a shame we won’t get to see any more of her.
The station conversation between Midge and Susie was very powerful and the setting was perfect for it.
I love Abe being proud of Midge so much. 🥹
Is Midge being booked on Gordon Ford what we’ve been building for all season? It just feels…anticlimactic I guess?
Trying to think about what the phone call could be… Maybe bailing Lenny out? 🤔
I can’t believe it’s the end next week. I’m so excited to finally see Lenny again, but also nervous about what will become of MidgeLenny, and trying to brace myself to be devastated by Luke’s performance of Lenny unraveling. 🥺😩

My review of Love Between Fairy and Devil // 苍兰诀
This was one of the most popular dramas of 2022, and you can definitely see why. It's such a fun, easy, and enjoyable drama to watch. Even though xianxia as a genre isn't for everyone, I feel like anyone can enjoy this one if you don't try to be too serious about it and just think of it as a sitcom.
I honestly had some prejudices about the cast and the character archetypes before watching this, but the drama definitely proved me wrong! Yu Shuxin really captured Xiao Lanhua's simplicity and kindness, while Wang Hedi really captured Dongfang Qingcang's badassery.
(They also play each other really well in the body swap scenes lol)
I found that I didn't mind Xiao Lanhua being less of a "strong and independent" character, because she brings so much joy and humour into any situation. It takes a special kind of courage and strength to see the goodness in the feared Dongfang Qingcang and to go through such efforts to save him.
Of the supporting cast, I also enjoyed Zhang Linghe's Chang Heng and Xiao Run (& the hilarious contrast between them)
But the rest of the supporting cast...idk... I ended up skipping a lot of scenes.
The soundtrack is a lot of fun! I actually sat through the opening theme a bunch of times because I liked the song haha
I loved the way they designed the different sets and costumes between the different realms. The look of the Moon Tribe reminded me a lot of how Magnificent Century looked tbh
I honestly don't consider this a must-watch drama, but it's definitely one that I enjoyed. There are some hyped dramas that have me like ?????? but this is a drama where I absolutely got the hype. If you haven't seen it already, I recommend giving this drama a try!
